- Basic Search Engine Promotion
I can't tell you how many times people have asked me, "How to do I get my site to come up in the top ten of the search engines so I can get hits and sell my product?" What they really want to know is, "How can I get people to show up to my website without spending any money on advertising my site!" People usually don't like my answer because accomplishing a "top ten ranking" on any search engine always requires careful thought along with a significant amount of work. Three types of "Search engines" abound on the Internet. They include true search engines, directories, and links pages. At last count approximately 10,000 sites referred to themselves as search engines, though only about a dozen sites rate your attention since they drive 97% of the Internet's search traffic. These sites include Google, Yahoo!, Overture, MSN, AltaVista, AllTheWeb, Lycos, DMOZ, and a few others. When a visitor logs onto a search engine looking for information, they enter "keywords" about the subject in hopes of obtaining a list of relevant websites. Each search engine or directory operates with its own rules about judging a site's relevancy to a keyword search. They look at text on the web page (body text) as well as words you can't see which reside in the actual code of the web pages. This code includes such things as alt tags, title tags, and others. Depending on the search engine, what you can't see may represent a far more important part of ranking well than the words appearing on the page. Search engines look at how many times a keyword shows up in the various parts of your website as well as actual location on the page. Assuming that an important subject for your pages would appear at the beginning of a page, those web pages starting with the keyword should rank better than those that don't. Also, in many cases, the more websites linking to your site will drastically impact your rankings. Entire books and websites exist to teach eager website owners how to pump up their rankings on all the various search engines, however these promotion tips will serve you well in your quest for the "Top Ten!" ** See what others have done for maximum exposure! Go to the various search engines and perform a search under which you would like to appear. Dissect those pages to find the common elements that make them show up. ~ How often and where do the keywords appear on the page? ~ How many words on the page in total? ~ Do they put keywords in their hypertext links? ~ How many other sites link to them and could you easily get a link from those sites too? ** Beware of registration vs. promotion Plenty of companies will "register" your website with thousands of search engines for about $50-$100. But simply submitting to the search engines won't do much for you. Without the proper structure in your website, only sheer luck will cause your site to pop up in the top ten! -=-=-==-=-=-=-==-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Need MORE TRAFFIC to your website or affiliate links? - To Blog Or Not To Blog
Web logs, commonly referred to as "blogs," represent all the rage right now in online publishing. Not really a newsletter or traditional html page publishing, blogs resemble more of a web-based diary where the creator records their thoughts, posts links, or responds to questions. With so much confusion online and an absence of "personal touch," blogs stand to actually bring back some humanity to the web by allowing people of like minds to come together. ** Why Blog? ** As the sea of information on the World Wide Web gets larger and deeper, people starve for knowledge. It's a fact that most human beings learn better when someone else shows or tells them how to do something, or explains what something means and its impact on their lives. People sitting around a fire and passing information one to another is as old as human history, and with blogs you can do the online equivalent. Blogs allow you to do everything from staying in touch with family members to building a world-wide following of loyal readers based around a hobby or your profession. ** Monologue or Dialogue? ** You basically have two choices when it comes to your blog. You can set it up so only you can post to the blog and viewers just read your posts, or you can allow your audience to comment on your posts and create a dialogue with them. Which model you choose comes down to your purpose for the blog. If you want to get feedback from customers, family members, friends, or subscribers, then allowing them to post will add a tremendous dimension to your communication. If you want to keep it simple, then start out with a blog where you post and others only read. ** How Do You Set Up a Blog? ** Log on to Blogger.com to set up a free account (monologue type). With absolutely zero experience and without reading the help files, I set up my blog - www.ebookblog.com - in about 5 minutes. At first I just posted a few old articles to fill in content and see how the process worked. Lately I've gotten the "blogger bug" and plan to start posting several times a week. Though my blog gets posted on my own website, Blogger.com also allows you to post to their server so you don't even need a hosting account to set up your own blog. You can get a more full-featured blog (dialogue type) from MovableType.org. There you have the option of getting their software installed on your server or obtaining a very reasonably priced account hosted on their servers. Either way you choose, posting rates as simple as typing into a web form, clicking a button, and your articles and comments automatically get posted to your blog (no html or ftp skills required). - Crying For Help Online
Anyone surfing the Internet for more than a week eventually needs help online from someone else. Whether regarding an online purchase, technical support on computer hardware, software support or some other type of help, sooner or later everyone needs assistance. The way in which you ask for help has everything to do with how fast and how well you receive assistance. In the online world where email rules, the following tips will help you get what you need and get on your way quickly. * Remember the "person" on the other end * When something on your computer or a particular website doesn't function properly, irritation seems a natural reaction, especially when you have no clue why things don't work or how to fix them. A sense of helplessness often leads to feelings of frustration and anger. However, no matter how upset you get, you must always remember that a live person will receive your email communication and, in many cases, they didn't cause your problem directly. Remember, those email "missiles" that make you feel better in the short term will almost always come back to haunt you over the long haul. When first asking for help, never send notes with phrases such as "If you don't respond to me within two hours I'm going to contact my lawyer." or "I sure hope this isn't a scam." Rarely do such comments produce the cheerful help or assistance you actually want. * "Please" and "Thank You" * Common courtesy goes a long way towards getting what you want, especially regarding technical support. Notes with nasty comments put the person on the receiving end in a bad frame of mind. However, notes with a polite tone sprinkled generously with "please" and "thank you" will usually receive prompt and courteous attention. You can always get more severe later if you must. * Don't use ALL CAPS * Using all capital letters in an email rates the same as SHOUTING in someone's face! Ignorance of this custom online does not excuse the behavior. Though you may think typing certain words in ALL CAPS merely shows emphasis on your part, to a "computer geek" you will seem rude and offensive. Once you have offended the person from whom you seek help, your chances of receiving that help diminish significantly. * Get to the point * Everything happens quickly online. Time ranks number one as the customer support person's scarcest resource and they don't have time to read long emails to figure out what you need. When asking for help, always include your name, contact information, order information, specific dates and a clear description of the help or information you need. Avoid including any extraneous information that won't contribute directly in assisting someone in giving you exactly what you need. Though the Internet and email may seem like an instant solution to many problems, people still run the technology. If you need help from another person, don't treat the person like a machine. You'll get a lot further by doing it this way. Author: Jim Edwards - Date: July 20, 2005

- How To Shop and Save On Website Hosting
"What's your web address?" From small "mom and pop" home-based businesses to mega-stores, people ask this question in business every single day. Even if you only operate a small, local business, if you don't have a website (or at least email) people honestly look at you funny. A few years ago, website hosting was one of the largest expenses connected with setting up a website. Now, with dramatic drops in pricing, website hosting can actually present the least costly component of operating a website. However, before you run out and sign up for $2-a-month website hosting and wake up tomorrow filled with regret, take 5 minutes right now and learn the main points to consider when evaluating any website host. Total Storage How much space do you get to store your website files? If you operate a small website with a handful of pages and only a couple of pictures per page, you can get by with 5-10 MB (megabytes) of disk space or less. However, if your site contains dozens of pages and hundreds of pictures, you may need a hosting plan with 10-25 MB of space. Data Transfer / Bandwidth Here's where many people fall down and get run over by the Internet bus! Bandwidth represents the total amount of traffic the website host allows you to receive. Successful sites that get a lot of traffic eat up more bandwidth than sites without many visitors. Honestly, bargain website hosting companies don't want you to get much traffic because your bandwidth costs them money. If you plan to do any business online, make sure you get a bare minimum of at least 1 GB (gigabyte) of data transfer per month. Email "Aliases" Most web hosts allow you to set up email addresses connected with your domain, such as jim@thenetreporter.com, and have them forward to your email account, like yourname@aol.com. The ability to set up email aliases forms an integral part of any online business. Make sure your hosting company allows you to set up at least 5 email aliases. Website Tools If you want to do anything more than let people look at static web pages, you will need to have certain tools available. The two most important tools are CGI and website statistics. These allow you to run scripts and see who came to your site and when. Tech Support Make sure you understand any company's technical support policies and hours of operation. Don't wait until Saturday afternoon to discover your only help option is to wait and email them Monday morning. Go to www.comparewebhosts.com and check out the tool for researching and comparing the offerings of over 9,000 different website hosting companies. Try the "Power Search" feature, which allows you to specify about 50 different variables, including price, company location, bandwidth, and number of email aliases allowed. It even lets you search by how often the hosting company backs up its servers to protect against data loss. Author: Jim Edwards - Date: July 31, 2005
- Skyrocket Website Traffic With
If you are looking for an immediate increase in your website traffic, and you don't want to shell out a lot of money for pay-per-click search engines, I'll let you in on a secret that has helped me make many sales and build large lists very quickly with zero cash up-front: it's called "OPT" (Other People's Traffic). Other website operators have the targeted website visitors you need right now - you just have to convince them to funnel some of it your way. Your mission is to find people who can refer you their traffic either for a percentage of the sale, a flat fee, a trade for services, or on a per-click basis. NOTE: I prefer to pay people a big percentage of the sale -as much as 50% - because it has the lowest risk for me as the merchant. I only pay when a sale is made and, therefore, I make it well worth someone's while to work with me. That's the whole idea behind a successful affiliate program. The quickest way to find people who can refer you traffic is to take inventory of whom you know. Who operates a site drawing the type of visitors you need? For example, if you have a website that sells fishing lures, then you want to find ezines, websites, and discussion groups dealing with fishing rods, tackle boxes, fish hooks, fishing trips, fishing supplies, etc. Get the picture? Once you have exhausted the list of people you know, go to the search engines and do a search for the keywords that would bring targeted traffic to your site. Make a list of the websites that rank well in those searches and approach those individuals with related, but non-competing sites about a traffic deal. To continue the above example, that means go to the search engines and do searches for "fishing rods", "fishing trips" and related keywords to your site to find others who already have the traffic you need, but who don't directly compete with you. Try to work all your agreements on a traffic trade or per-sale basis first so you won't have to pay any cash out of pocket until after a sale is made. If you don't have any traffic to trade, or they don't want to get paid by the sale only, then you should negotiate a per-click or per-signup deal. Paying by the click or by the signup means you only pay when a visitor comes to your site or signs up to receive your newsletter or other information. With this structure you only pay for performance and don't waste any money on advertising that doesn't directly result in bringing visitors to your site. You have 3 main choices for funneling another site's traffic to yours: endorsed mailings, pop-up windows, and link trades. 1. Endorsed Mailings Endorsed mailings are by far the best way to funnel traffic from another site. A well-written endorsement letter by a website operator who already has a relationship with people who can buy from you is often worth its weight in gold. An effective endorsed mailing can result in traffic, sales, and money in your pocket within just a few hours of sending it. 2. Pop-Up Windows Focused "pop-up" windows represent the next fastest way to funnel traffic to your site. When used incorrectly, pop-up windows create an annoying distraction for web surfers. Make sure your pop-up windows are relevant to exactly what visitors came to your site for in the first place! My experiments have shown that a "pop-under" works best. This is where your website pops behind the other person's page. Go to http://www.7dayebook.com for an example. You'll see my other ebook, "eBook Secrets Exposed," pop *under* the 7 Day eBook site. When the visitor is finished viewing the main page and closes it... your page is right there! TIP: For maximum sales, make sure that your page is closely related to the page that is referring traffic to you. 3. Link Trades The next way to funnel traffic from other sites is using "Reciprocal Links" - which is a fancy way of saying trading links with someone. Make sure you negotiate a high profile spot for your link on the other person's site. Creativity is key when negotiating with other websites to steer some or all of their traffic your way. Show them how sending you traffic will make them money through affiliate commissions, how their readers will appreciate being introduced to new and valuable products (yours), or how you can open a new stream of income for them by paying them a few cents for every unique visitor they refer to you. They win by making extra money and making their customers happy. You win by attracting traffic to your site that is focused and highly targeted to your offers. Creating win-win scenarios like these will cause people to jump at the chance to work with you and send you all the "OPT" you can handle. - Increase Sales By Flying Under Your Prospects'
How do you persuade someone to do what you want them to do? A whole world of marketing exists around us trying to do that every minute of the day. Do you even notice it anymore or, like your prospects, have you subconsciously set up a system of "radar defenses" against the daily bombardment of marketing messages to increase sales? Take a minute and count up the advertising methods which fight for your attention (and money) every day. Just the basic list includes: · Yellow page ads · Newspaper and magazine ads · Postcards, catalogs, and direct mail circulars in your "snail mail" box · Radio pitches interrupting the flow of your favorite songs · TV ads - about 20 minutes worth per hour now · Hundreds of storefronts, "mega" malls, and strip malls · Highway billboards by the thousands · Circulars hung on your doorknob · Illegal signs on stop signs and telephone poles · Legitimate email messages · Spam email or UCE (unsolicited commercial email) Just these 11 sources can overwhelm your brain with marketing messages. Like trapped rats, people develop defenses against this never-ending onslaught. They throw up a wall or a "radar defense" that goes into action the minute they smell a "pitch" or a sales job. Don't blame them. We all do it! So how can you get around this psychological wall against the constant sales and marketing messages? Well, the answer does NOT lie in hitting people with more frequent and obnoxious advertising or sly, sneaky tactics. You might get them to trust you for a minute, but it will backfire in the long run. You must do two things instead: 1. First, you must establish credibility for yourself and your business as an expert. 2. Second, you must reduce their fears about doing business with you. Doing these two things will get you past their defenses and allow you the opportunity to persuade them to buy your product. So how do you accomplish these two "simple" things? What will win someone's attention, raise your credibility, and lower their fear factor all at the same time? The one-word answer really applies to most everyone. Trust! If a seller can get behind your defenses with information which makes you trust them, then that credibility will carry over into a sale much of the time. How can you get this credibility? Well, take this next fact as online marketing "gospel," for many people have proven its effectiveness. Fact: Publishing and promoting with free articles gives you one of the most powerful opportunities available to tip the buyer's credibility scale in your favor. How can we prove this works? Quite easily actually. Take a break from reading this and go check out a newspaper or magazine for a minute. Which do you trust more, the ads or the articles? Most people will choose the articles hands down. Why? Because the articles don't try to "sell" you anything. Instead, they hand out useful information for educational or other practical purposes. Most of us grew up in a culture which says we can believe and "trust" what appears in the standard "news" or "information" format. In other words, if it appears in print, then we can believe and trust the author. So go ahead! Use this lifetime of conditioning to your advantage in selling your products and services! Very few things will create an atmosphere of trust and confidence in people as reading one of your articles on a subject that greatly interests them. It shows you know your business. It also demonstrates you will do more than just try to sell them something. Publishing articles literally lets you fly under their advertising "radar defenses." So remember these points when deciding whether or not to use articles to promote your business: 1. Few things create as much trust and confidence in the minds of potential customers as reading an article you wrote on a subject which specifically and intensely interests them. 2. Articles establish credibility quickly because, right or wrong, we've all been trained to trust the "news." 3. An article, or series of articles, will differentiate you from the competition, who bombard people with nothing but sales messages. 4. Providing content-rich, non-sales-oriented articles will also help build and solidify your relationship with existing customers so they give you repeat business. - Turn One-Time
Every website owner faces the same challenge: How to get more traffic to their website. "Build it and they will come" worked for Kevin Costner in "Field of Dreams," but that approach leads to bankruptcy and a failed business when it comes to your website. Any savvy website owner knows that it takes a lot of work, time, and money to bring a visitor to your site for the first time. Smart marketers also know that it rates a lot easier and cheaper to get people to come back for a return visit than to attract them for the first time. The following tips will help any website owner convert more one-time "lookers" into repeat visitors and customers. ** Surveys ** Hold an interactive poll or survey on your web site. Ask your website visitors questions about a topic of intense interest to them. Not only do people enjoy giving their opinion, but they'll also want to read the results as you compile them and update them on your website over the next day or week. One way to get their email address is to tell them you'll email the final numbers once the results are compiled. My favorite survey tool is www.oneminutepoll.com. ** Free Prizes ** If appropriate, hold an ongoing prize drawing on your web site. The prizes you give should fit with the interests of your target audience and enable you to showcase what you offer for sale from your website. For example, if you sell computer cables, give away something like Velcro cord ties with your web address on them and avoid things like teddy bears or bumper stickers. ** Original / Hard-to-find Content ** People go online first and foremost to get specific, relevant, timely information in areas that interest them. For some that means news articles, for others sports scores, and for others it means current prices for things like stocks or commodities. Whatever content they want, give it to people in a way they can't find anywhere else (or at least not very easily) and make it easy for them to see that your site rates a bookmark in their browser so they can return often. ** Brain Teasers ** People love a challenge, especially in an area that holds great professional or special interest for them. If you can provide a quiz, trivia questions, puzzles or some other "brain teaser" for people, many will take up the challenge. You get them to return to your website by posting the answers and making that the only way they can see if they got it right. ** Breaking News ** People crave up-to-the-minute news on subjects about which they feel very strongly. Some investors, for example, spend hours combing the Web for nuggets of information to help them evaluate specific markets, companies, or stocks. One way to make your site invaluable to your audience members is to simply post a news bite, tip, or current "nugget" of relevant information on your site daily. (Gee, kind of sounds like a BLOG doesn't it?) If the information you give makes people jump up and holler "MORE! MORE!" then you can quickly build up a regular following. ** Resource Directories ** Few things keep people coming back to a website more than a constantly updated directory they can tap for industry-specific resources any time they need them. This technique works especially well if it's hard to locate good resources related to your topic because people place a higher value on hard-to-find information. - Starting a New Business Online?
It seems everybody has a "can't miss" idea for starting a new web-based business, despite innumerable news accounts of most web businesses going belly-up in a short time. Most folks still think, mistakenly of course, that a website alone somehow magically produces customers who will buy even the most off-beat items and services. They fail to realize that buying or building a website represents only part of the overall online marketing equation. Anyone considering starting a new business online or taking an existing business online should heed the following advice to avoid many heartaches and an empty wallet. Target your audience. What exactly do your customers want and what words do they use to describe the products and services they will purchase? Don't assume you know how and what they want to buy - ask them! From this research you will determine the "keywords" your customers will use to find your business while surfing and using search engines. You should then focus completely on these keywords while constructing your entire web presence. Build a focused site. Your website should center exclusively on those issues directly related to what you sell online. If you sell "orange baskets" then only write about the characteristics, features and benefits of using your orange baskets. Take great care in writing your copy to keep your text focused on one subject per page and make liberal use of your keywords and their synonyms. Constructing your pages in this manner will aid you greatly in achieving good directory listings and attracting search engine traffic. Use search engines effectively. If building a highly focused, relevant site to display your products and services gets you to first base with the search engines, then building "bridge" pages will get you rounding third and headed for home! The term "bridge page" characterizes a web page that focuses on one keyword phrase throughout the entire page. You should build dozens, if not hundreds, of these pages, each of which focuses on one keyword phrase a potential customer would use to find you in a search engine. You should then submit these pages to the individual search engines and monitor them for the traffic they produce. Accept Change As a FACT of Life! Understand that creating a successful online business requires commitment to a process of constant promotion and continuous education. You must stay current on cost-effective search engine and directory promotion techniques for driving traffic to your site as well as any factors specifically affecting your industry online. Accept the fact that change happens online at two speeds: fast and faster! Just when you think you have everything figured out, a search engine changes its rules, or starts charging for services, or goes from important to irrelevant in the blink of an eye. Your ability to predict change, master it, and "roll with the punches" will determine your long-term success or failure online. Author: Jim Edwards - Date: August 17, 2005
- 3 Ways To STOP Affiliate Link
Let's face the facts! Almost everyone online today is looking to make or save a buck any way they can. In the past, most of the people who clicked on your affiliate links used to purchase without a second thought... but, as times get tougher online, it seems a growing number won't! As money gets tighter and product prices rise, people who know how to manipulate the system will sometimes replace your affiliate ID with theirs and "hijack" your commissions. Here's an example: Let's say your affiliate link is www.ebookaboutcats.com/?live-well. Say the highjacker uses the affiliate ID of captain-hook. What he would do is replace your ID with his, and buy from the URL www.ebookaboutcats.com/?captain-hook. The bottom line: the affiliate link hijacker puts your money in his pocket. In other cases, they can't stand the thought of you "making money off them" so they bypass you by simply chopping off the end of your affiliate link that contains your ID. Instead of buying from www.ebookaboutcats.com/?live-well, the bypasser will simply "chop off" the affiliate ID at the end and simply buy from the plain URL www.ebookaboutcats.com --without your affiliate ID attached! Either way, you get cheated out of your rightful commission. To help you fight these affiliate link hijackers I offer a couple of my best (proven and battle tested) tips, which will at least confuse these "hijackers" and, in many cases, often defeat and disarm them completely. Side Note: If someone really, really wants to steal your affiliate commission, they will find a way; however, most hijackers are just opportunists who will only act if they see an easy buck. The first and cheapest way to hide your affiliate links is using a javascript redirect page. This is where you hide your affiliate link in a page on your site using a simple javascript that redirects people to your affiliate link. It works great not to expose your "naked" affiliate link in your actual email messages and ezine ads, but, once people get redirected to the true affiliate link, many affiliate programs expose the affiliate link along with your ID in the browser address bar. Here's an example of a redirect script in action. Click => http://www.ebookfire.com/esejs.html Notice how the link takes you to a page where you can see my affiliate ID, ebookfire, in your web browser's address bar. Like it or not, someone can replace my ID with theirs and "hijack" the commission... but at least the redirect script keeps them from immediately seeing my "naked" affiliate link (http://hop.clickbank.net/?ebookfire/ebksecrets) when I publish it in my newsletter, email, or on my website. You can get free redirect scripts just about anywhere you find free javascripts. Here is the script I use http://www.ebookfire.com/jrs.shtml. A better way to hide your affiliate links is using a zero- frame or "invisible" frame that masks the affiliate link by making it appear you are sending people to a page on your website. In reality, you are actually sending them to your affiliate link. This is the technique used by those "sub-domain" redirect services that provide you with urls like http://ese.ebookfire.net. While giving someone a link like that is much better than using a "naked" affiliate link such as http://hop.clickbank.net/?ebookfire/ebksecrets, there is a problem. As soon as someone does a "view >> source" in their web browser they'll see your naked affiliate link plain as day... which instantly blows your cover! Currently the best way to protect your affiliate commissions from ruthless hijackers is to use a combination of a zero- frame page along with URL encryption. This involves sending someone to URL that looks like a page on your site, but actually pulls in your affiliate link like those "sub- domain" services. However, there's one critical difference... If someone does a "view >> source" in their browser, you have added protection in that all they will see is a jumble of computer code instead of your naked affiliate link. Check out this example of a zero-frame with URL encryption in action. Click => http://www.ebookfire.com/ese.html Side Note: Beware of cloaking scripts that use javascript to mask your affiliate link because they could malfunction in some web browsers. Here's the bottom line: if you are going to sell through other people's affiliate programs, never send a "naked" affiliate link... you're just asking for people to hijack or bypass you if you do. If you want to get paid more often through your affiliate links, make sure it's not obvious you're referring people to an affiliate link. If they can't easily see how to hijack or bypass your link, a lot more people who would have taken the money out of your pocket will just go ahead and buy through your link - which is, after all, the whole point! :-)

- Simple survey leads to big profits online
Big profits online follows a simple formula... "Ask and you shall _______." Most people fill in the blank with "receive". Not only is it a well-known phrase from the Bible, but it's also a very powerful online marketing principle. If you operate a business and want to sell massively more products and services quickly, the fastest way to do it is by simply asking your customers and prospects what they want... and then give it to them. In the past, gathering critical research information through customer surveys represented a very time-consuming, expensive and labor-intensive process available only to large organizations. However, with inexpensive online tools, even a one-person business can now quickly and easily conduct powerful surveys to discover exactly what customers want - and then give it to them. Virtually any business can benefit from conducting a survey because the information you get is priceless for your planning purposes. Do you know what your customers plan to purchase next? (If you did, you could be the one to sell it to them!) Do you know why they've purchased from you in the past? (If they've bought once, they'll buy again for the same reason!) Do you know what other products and services they have purchased from your competitors and why? (So you can be the one they buy from next...) Knowing the answers to those three questions could literally transform your whole business plan (and wallet) overnight! The sad fact is most business owners just *guess* what their customers want. Sure, they might make an educated guess based on past experience, but it's still just that -- a guess. By conducting a survey you don't guess what people want -you *know* what people want! When conducting a survey (online or offline) it's critical to remember these three points: 1. Keep your survey short and sweet. People don't want to spend more than a couple of minutes answering your questions. I personally try never to ask more than 6 questions and they are always "yes/no", multiple-choice questions that don't take much time. Short questions also allow you to get instant "gut-level" reactions from people, which is helpful in figuring out what people will buy. People purchase on emotion, so a fast response will show you their true feelings on a subject since they don't have time to think about it. 2. Give people a "bribe" for taking the survey. You will increase response rates by 1,500% (15 times) or more by offering people a reward in exchange for 2 minutes of their time to take your survey. With so many time constraints, giving people a "perk" for giving you some of their valuable time will make the difference between getting a dozen responses and getting several hundred. 3. Use simple, easy-to-understand questions. When first surveying any group, you simply want to know what they like/dislike, will/won't buy in the future, have/haven't bought in the past. As you get to know a group better, you can ask more detailed questions, but also make sure you offer better bribes if you expect people to take even more time answering your questions. When choosing an online survey tool to help you administer your survey, make sure it meets the following criteria: · It should require no programming on your part. You want to just plug in your questions and have it generate all the code, etc. so you can copy and paste it into a web page and send it out. · It should automatically calculate all survey results for you in 'real-time' so you don't have to manually calculate responses. Do not get stuck doing "number crunching" because your survey tool doesn't automatically calculate results. · It should send a "thank you" letter to people taking your survey so you can send them a "gift" for participating. Thanking people for participating goes a long way toward leaving them with a favorable impression of you, as well as setting the stage for both your next survey and your next sale. For a free report on how to quickly and easily conduct your own simple surveys to increase business profits, go to http://www.ebookfire.com/survey.html. Though the report is aimed at a specific online audience (ebook publishers), the principles will help any business succeed using surveys. Author: Jim Edwards - Date: August 24, 2005
- Surviving Tough Times Online
With economic problems dominating the headlines, all businesses, online and off, need to make the most of every single customer contact if they hope to stay in business! Consumers want to hang onto every dollar and only spend money for things they feel they really "must" have. To put yourself and your business in the best position for surviving tough times online and thriving in the current economy, follow these simple rules for making every website visitor count. The first step in making every visitor count involves knowing exactly what people want from you. The vast majority of businesses never bother to ask what customers and visitors want, and therefore, they make fewer sales than they could with a little research. Smart online business owners use surveys regularly to stay in touch with customer needs, tastes, and preferences. It costs next to nothing to ask a customer what they want and then simply give it to them. But, it may cost you everything if you don't take the time to ask first. Next, businesses hoping to make it in these uncertain economic times must form alliances with other business owners who cater to the same audience. Other business owners have the traffic you need in order to grow your business. For this reason, you must constantly look for creative ways to work with them. The easiest way to profit by working with other website owners involves endorsing each other's products to your own lists or, at a minimum, trading links to funnel traffic back and forth. Creating traffic from "scratch" rates the slowest and costliest way to bring customers to your website. Persuading other people to send targeted traffic your way puts you on the fast track to profits. The third step for triumphing in uncertain economic times entails building one-on-one relationships with your customers and prospects, even if you have thousands of them. They must feel as if you are speaking only to them in all of your communications. The quickest way to accomplish this involves specializing in one highly specific area of concern for them. In other words, no matter what you sell, you'll never succeed as "Wal-Mart." To succeed, your online business must completely meet the needs of your customers in one, specific area. Time to face facts: the Internet won't go away! In fact, despite the well publicized "dot bombs" of a couple of years ago, the Internet forms a more integral part of our lives than ever. Even if you feel like your business, your job, or some other important aspect of your life doesn't depend on the Internet today, what about tomorrow? Finally, everyone must stay current at all times with the ever-changing landscape of the Internet. At some point, virtually every one of us will find the Internet an integral part of our business lives. As effective business people, we must develop the ability to adapt to change and give customers what they want - not in months or years -but in the space of hours or days. - Take your files anywhere with Yahoo Briefcase
Imagine you worked all week on a report for presentation to an important client tomorrow morning. At the end of the day you congratulate yourself and save the report files to your computer's hard drive. The next morning you arrive at work only to find your worst nightmare coming true - your computer won't boot and you can't get the files. Your boss starts breathing down your neck to produce the report because the client arrives in five minutes. What will you do? Yahoo to the rescue! With lightning-like speed you jump onto a colleague's computer and pull up your personal hard drive on the http://briefcase.yahoo.com website. Log onto your free account with a unique user name and password and bingo, your files come up on the screen. Almost instantly you download the report, print it off and produce lifesaving - not to mentions career saving -results. Yahoo Briefcase, a free service of search portal giant Yahoo!, offers users a free 30 megabyte hard drive on the Internet. The site supports itself by -you guessed it -displaying banner ads to entice you to buy things. The advantages of the service, however, far outweigh any pains of viewing a few ads. Remote file backups Everyone knows they should back up their files, but most people keep their computer and backup files in the same place. Ever wonder what would happen if your computer and your backup files get destroyed by fire, flood or theft? Large corporations spend big money to keep their files archived on remote servers "just in case". Now you can do the same thing with your vital files at no cost. Mobile file access Everyone moves around so much these days. Have you ever wanted access to a file on your home machine while you worked at the office? Ever needed to finish up some work at home but with files on the office PC? Now you can easily access, edit, share and modify your files anywhere you can access the Internet just by uploading and downloading files through virtually any web browser on any web connection. File sharing between users Do you enjoy waiting for huge files to upload or download through your e-mail program? Nobody does! Don't tie up the e-mail servers with file downloads, use Yahoo Briefcase to share files with other users. Simply upload your files to your briefcase and then email your friend a message with a link and instructions to download the file. Yahoo Briefcase even lets you place a time limit on how long the link remains valid. This means the link will "expire" after a certain period of time so people can't pass it around. Digital Family Photos Another great use for the service involves sharing digital pictures over the web. As those file sizes grow with enhancements in digital photography, having a password protected spot online from which to share the virtual family photo album comes in very handy.

- The Web's Best Kept Traffic Secret
Did you realize that thousands of website operators use a simple technique to generate targeted visitors to their websites without paying a dime in advertising? It's true. In fact, the technique works so well that many of them don't want you to discover their traffic secret, how they get those thousands of website visitors and make so many sales on virtual "auto-pilot." Their method? Creating tightly focused articles other people publish in their ezines (online magazines and email newsletters) and post on their websites. This method rates so powerful that some even call it "the web's best kept traffic secret." Now, you may ask, "Why would an ezine publisher or website owner publish my articles for their subscribers?" The answer: Content! Over a 100,000 ezines and newsletters operate on the web (along with millions of websites) covering everything from pets and cooking to investments and real estate. Many of them need tightly focused content and they simply can't produce all of it themselves. Look at it this way... it's the same reason newspapers use the Associated Press. Individual newspapers often can't afford staff writers to cover every story, so they accept articles from outside their organization. You can do the exact same thing for various ezines and websites catering to your niche audience! You can get valuable publicity -- exposure you often couldn't even pay for if you wanted to -- by providing valuable, content-rich articles in exchange for a byline and a link to your website (called a "resource box")! The following represent only a few of the enormous benefits of writing and distributing simple articles online: ** Attain "Expert" Status ** Let's face it! In the eyes of virtually everyone who reads your articles you rank as the "expert" on the subject. Just look at people who write newspaper columns. You may disagree with their viewpoints, but they still have an elevated status in your mind compared to the "average Joe" off the street. ** Pre-sell Website Visitors ** If your article appeals to a niche audience hungry for more information on a very focused subject, you actually pre-sell them better than any sales pitch. In their minds, you've already delivered content they really want so when they click over to your site you already have a "reputation" in their minds. ** Traffic Lasts Longer ** Even though the Internet changes very quickly, webmasters are usually very slow to remove content from their sites. Once you get an article posted on another person's website, you have an excellent chance of that article staying there for weeks, months, even years. ** Increase Links To Your Site ** In a recent search I found just a dozen of my articles posted on over 813 different websites! Not only do those postings bring me traffic, but they also help my search engine positioning because of my increased "Link Popularity." ** Builds Your Affiliate Base ** Fact: Affiliates always take the path of least resistance. If you provide excellent articles they can easily post on their sites or copy and paste into their ezines, your affiliates will promote you more often and more effectively compared to those who don't give them tools. Plus, as you make more sales and publish articles, other people will see you providing excellent tools and will want to sign up as your affiliate so they can use them too! ** Build a Huge "Opt-In" Email List ** You can use articles to build up a huge list of subscribers by simply compiling several articles into a series and delivering them at preset intervals. Often called a "mini-course," this technique allows you not only to prove to your subscribers that you deliver great information, but enables you to capture their name and email address so you can send them articles and special offers in the future (with their permission). ** Requires No Special Skills ** People often think they need to be a "writer" in order to publish articles, but that's not true! FACT: If you have a passion for a subject and can talk and explain things like you would to a friend over a cup of coffee, you can write articles people will love to read. So if you operate a website selling virtually any type of product or service (whether your own or as an affiliate), publishing and promoting with articles should rank high on your list of traffic generation strategies. No other method of generating targeted traffic to your website provides the quality, quantity and steadiness of traffic in such a simple, straightforward, and cost-effective manner.
